‘Well? What happens?’ asked Etta.

‘I don’t want to say …’ Bushy whispered. ‘It’s so awful.’

‘OH, JUST TELL THEM, EVERGREEN!’ shouted Santa.

‘You can hear me whispering?’ said the elf.

‘You have a very loud whisper!’ said Santa, coming over. His walk did not seem that steady. ‘You whisper loudly, like all elves.’

‘You really think I should tell them?’

Santa sighed. ‘Might as well.’ He put his arm round Evergreen, and took another long swig from his bottle of brown liquid. ‘I love you, Bushy. Do you know that? I do. You’re my best elf.’

‘OK,’ said Evergreen, pushing him gently away. ‘So … basically … Winterzone have said that if he breaks the contract, they will put it about that … that there is no Santa.’

Monty and Etta both frowned at this.

‘But … that doesn’t make sense,’ said Etta. ‘How can they say there is no Santa if –’ she looked over at him: he was dancing now, a small strange jig – ‘Santa himself is saying, “Here I am! Santa!”?’
